A big chopper at Hove says the argus
Visitors to Hove Recreation ground were amazed when an RAF Chinook landed in the middle of the rugby field.
The ten-tonne helicopter, flown by Flight Lieutenant Marc Heal, came to mark Hove Rugby Club's Mini junior team awards ceremony today.
Flt Lt Heal is a former Hove rugby player and will be flying out to Afghanistan for his fourth tour of duty in two weeks' time.
RAF Wing Commander Allan Ward, who is the vice president of Hove Rugby Club, said: "It was a chance for the public to come and see what they're paying for and a good experience."
The Chinook, which can carry 40 soldiers or up to 80 refugees, stayed on the pitch for two hours and was opened up so visitors could have a look inside.
Members of the 176 (Hove) Squadron Air Training Corps visited as well.
Bee Robinson, the chairman and coach of the club's mini section, said the youngsters enjoyed watching the helicopter land.
He said: "Everyone started running to where it was landing. The dust was flying up, you couldn't see anything, then all the kids came running back out."
His son, Harry, five, said it was amazing to see the RAF helicopter, adding: "But when it landed, we had to leg it."
